How to change your brain, with new techniques and tools that can make your mind sharper.
The next generation of brain scientists, led by researchers from the University of Cambridge, has been working on a new technique that could be applied to the brain.
The team’s work is a key step towards creating a new class of treatments for brain disorders, including schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis.
“It is exciting that we are able to see the promise of our approach for developing treatments for neurodegenerative diseases such as neurodegence, but this is an exciting first step,” said Professor Jonathan Fitch, one of the researchers involved in the research.
“We now have the technology and the tools to be able to create new drugs that target brain cells and treat brain disorders.”
The new approach involves using an enzyme called arginase, which allows the body to produce and break down protein called amyloid beta, which accumulates in the brain’s white matter.
“If you get a bad dose of amyloids, they accumulate in the white matter and can damage the connections between neurons,” Professor Fitch said.
“This leads to a cascade of symptoms, including memory loss, cognitive impairment, depression and behavioural and learning problems.”
“In the next few years, we could see a new generation of therapies that are designed to target the brain cells themselves and the underlying causes of the disease.”
That’s where our approach is going to be really exciting.
“This new approach could be a major step towards a new treatment for schizophrenia and other brain disorders.
It involves targeting the amylots, which are the protein plaques that form on the surfaces of the brain and which have the potential to cause cognitive problems and cognitive decline.”
The goal is to make sure the brain is protected,” Professor John Wainwright, the co-author of the study and Professor of Neuroscience at the University, said.
Professor Wainwyr says there are three main ways that the new technique could be used.”
And the last is to manipulate the brain using electrical stimulation of the synapses, which is a technique that has been used successfully to treat Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.”
Another is to target brain tissue, which has the potential for having a better effect.

Professor Fitch says there is still a lot of work to do before this new technique can be used clinically.”

Future studies should look at how it works in humans.
“To create a better understanding of how arginases work, Professor Wainwrights team worked with Professor Michael Dittrich from the School of Biological Engineering at the City University of New York, who also led the work.”
Arginases are the building blocks of brain proteins and the basis for all proteins in our bodies,” Professor Wainsworth said.
This work is published in the journal Nature.
